Dolph's Letter #28

Dear Sweetheart-

Had an interesting day yesterday.

But first — how are you dear? I do hope you are receiving my mail regularly even though I still haven't heard + probably won't for several more weeks — when you first get my permanent address + answer it, for I guess my mail that has been following me is just picking around — darn — I sure miss it.

Well to get on — I went up to the front yesterday, because it was an opportunity to see what it was like + came right back + all the while have nothing to do in the way of responsibility — merely accompany another officer who had to take care of something + came right back.

I arrived shortly after the objective was taken — a little while afterwards. I can more than just imagine what the French went through after seeing some of the German civilians who had stayed. Master Race — well.

Anyway I saw one of the company commanders + chatted with him as well as some of the men + looked around. Of course it wasn't pleasant — I didn't go for the thrill of it, I assure you, rather that when I shall have to take my men into something like that, I shall be better prepared. There really was no risk. It was good to get back of course, but the morale of the men is great.

Just as a general observation — when the Germans give up a town, village or city — the place doesn't get too beaten up. Where they don't — they might just as well start the place in another location.

News looks good + of course every one is hopeful.

Champagne is plentiful — cheap stuff though (not aged + probably shouldn't be drunk) but I can't very well refuse one glass of it a night (or can I?)

Take care of yourself dear — I love you so much.

Your devoted husband
Dolph
