Germany Dolph's Letter #52
Dear Sweetheart —
Still not back with my outfit, but have been traveling around quite a bit + have was unable to mail the two previous letters.
Saw Mainz — was that place really beat up. Don't see how they could rebuild it — there wasn't one building which wasn't a hollow shell, if it was standing at all.
Of course I crossed the Rhine — the current reminded me of the Hudson + Harlem where they joined at Spuyten Duyvil Creek — but it was no ways as majestic + inspiring as the Hudson. I'd say it was about 2/3 rds as wide as the Hudson at 207; but of course that was just one section of the Rhine.
Had quite a sight seeing tour of Germany. Can't fully understand why they went to war — but of course Fawer is the answer to that — saw so many fields under cultivation. The whole countryside had some crop or other — + you just couldn't believe there was a war, for it was untouched, + the women, old men + boys were visible at work in the fields. The Nazis must have allowed a good many farmers to remain at their homes — impossible for it to be otherwise if it is true that they have no mechanized farming implements — as I haven't seen one in all of Germany so far — + I have seen a lot of territory. Could be they have hidden the machinery + moved it though.
A good many of the towns are untouched — our boys just rolled right through them. Again they looked substantial.
I have no sympathy for these people — to have so much + still allow themselves to be forced to kill others. Despicable.
(Shall continue after chow)
Good chow — ham, potatoes, string beans, coffee, pineapple, bread + butter.
Also did quite a bit of travelling on the famed Autobahn — just know that it is one military highway which bypasses towns + cities — they sure make a fuss about this road — the Germans — when in reality it is a commonplace road not anyway near so good as our highways! Just a four lane concrete road + that's all — why the shoulders of the road are really nonexistent — if you should happen to go off the road, by accident, while travelling you stand a good chance of having the vehicle turn over.
Well dear that's about all for now except — my love for you is wonderfully bright. I love you so very much sweet + miss you ever so much.
Your devoted husband, Dolph
