Germany Dolph's Letter #53

Dear Sweetheart —

Was unable to write yesterday — censoring mail all morning, hiking all afternoon + since I'm in the field (No I'm not with my outfit) couldn't write at night. Sorry.

Everything is going on the same except — we received word the President died — Sad what a sad day not only for us but all free people + those who wish to be free. One of the Captains said the story of his death was confirmed by BBC — so it's probably true. Would that Wallace were the person to step in or Mrs. Roosevelt. All we can do is pray that Truman will come through + fill in the canvas which Roosevelt sketched. At least the President died with the knowledge that Germany's defeat was in the offing + the peace was more than sketched; + also the downfall of Japan would not be too dis- tant.

To think that the President — a purveyor of the good things of life + life itself should die + Hitler should still live. Truly the ways of the Lord are mysterious; but what must be must be + we shall continue. The President's death shall not be in vain. We shall go on + win that peace which shall bring about good will among all men which he died for. That shall be our inducement to that great American.

I hope dear you shall not be too depressed by the passing of the President. You are doing a fine job, I know. Keep it up. I cheer you from afar.

I love you.

Your devoted husband, Dolph
