The 10th Armored Division, nicknamed the "Tiger Division," was one of the most distinguished American armored units of World War II. Though Dolph was attached to the division rather than a permanent member, his experiences were shaped by its operations.
Formation and Training
The 10th Armored was activated in July 1942 at Fort Benning, Georgia. After extensive training at various camps across the United States, the division shipped overseas in September 1944.
The Battle of the Bulge
The division's most famous action came during the Battle of the Bulge (December 1944 - January 1945). Elements of the 10th Armored, particularly Combat Command B, played a crucial role in the defense of Bastogne, helping to hold the vital crossroads town against German siege until Patton's Third Army broke through.
Into Germany
After the Bulge, the 10th Armored participated in the drive into Germany, crossing the Rhine and pushing deep into the Reich. By the time Dolph joined the unit in early March 1945, they were fighting in the Saar-Palatinate region. He was wounded on March 17 near Wadern as the division continued its advance.
