Convalescent Hospital, France — First Wedding Anniversary
Dolph's Letter #39
Dear Sweetheart —
Happy Anniversary my dear. One year ago we consecrated ourselves to each other. That was the most auspicious event in my life. To think that you were willing to dedicate your life to me makes me so very happy + proud. For surely God granted me the loveliest of brides, + I hope that I have really made you happy — for that is my life's ambition. I love you so very much + am sad that we are apart at this time. Rest you we shall be together.
As if the Army knew I was to celebrate my anniversary they announced that gifts were available — one the limit — yesterday. So, tho it shall arrive late you will receive a gift that the Px bought in Paris + resold it to me. It was packed very nicely, but unfortunately it had to be repacked by the Red Cross for shipment. Anyway I know you'll like it, + it just struck me — well Jean will say, "Why didn't you send me a gift that will arrive on time?" I did — made arrange-ments while still in the states + hope you like it — wish it were better. And it also gave rise to another thought — I arranged for a gift — wanted to surprise you, but — for the three women in my life — my mother, your Mother + You — by a Mother's day gift. I wouldn't tell you but it just dawned on me that it falls on a Sunday, May 13 so I gave your office address — I hope you can make arrangements with the superintendent to get it to you. Sorry I messed it all up dear. No need to tell our Mothers though.
I don't know how you shall celebrate the anniversary — but I saved a can of tomato juice from last week's rations + I shall toast you + us with it. Also they surprised us with a box of candy with our cigarette ration — in a combat area you get a free pkg of cigarettes each day — + shall munch on that too. It will be quite nice + I'm thankful — so very thankful that God has looked over us — blessing me with such a beautiful bride.
I love you — always + all ways, + tho I close this letter I never close my heart.
Your devoted husband,
Dolph
