Dolph's Letter #59

Dear Sweetheart —

How are you dear?

I'm still in the same place — loafing — + it isn't conducive to unusual occurrences which bear relating.

Still, there was something very incongruous which happened last night. We had dinner music with our evening meal! Can you imagine + — we are billeted in the woods, living under canvas; also eating. + some one got the bright idea of moving the Chaplain's portable organ over to our mess hall + teamed the organist with a violinist. I got a big kick out of it, but you could not listen too well as the babble of the officers' voices was just too much competition. I appreciated the music though.

Played a little poker yesterday — a little in the afternoon — won; + broke at night. I'm glad I know how to play poker, + doubly glad I know when to quit. If I lose a few dollars I stop! And I just don't have to play either. See several officers who just must play. I can stand around + watch, thereby deriving a vicarious pleasure + it does for me. So, if I'm second best, like in the afternoon, I cease playing, watch + join the game at a later time.

This afternoon I have to teach — tough!

I hope you are well sweet — you know I'm in love with you, your devoted husband
